Andalusian Bantams

Andalusians in the UK are very rare, they have no breed club at the time of writing but are covered by the Rare Poultry Society; I am lucky enough to own and breed this beautiful variety both in Large Fowl and Bantam size. It took me a long time to get my initial stock, which I bought from a breeder in Shropshire, even though I am based in west central Scotland. These charming fowls do not breed true and mating two birds of the desired pigeon blue together will only produce fifty per cent of the chicks with this colour, the others being black or splashed (white with the occasional dark marking). This and the fact it is so difficult to get well marked exhibition stock anywhere puts people off. I am desperate to get more people keeping, breeding, showing and swapping these birds particularly in bantam size.

I am putting this page online, so people can hopefully find me and get in touch using search engines, I have also set up a facebook page, to try and network and find people, I believe I have made contact with most of the bantam size breeders, and would be delighted to sell hatching eggs or put you in touch with your nearest breeder. On facebook type in “Andalusian Bantam and Large Fowl Fans” or e-mail me direct jamiegmactavish@icscotland.net

I have made a study of this breed over the years, and as well as owning the 2005 book Andalusian Fowl by Dr. Joseph Batty, have studied the Victorian book written on the subject by “Silver Dun” in 1897, and now own an original copy of the 1893 book “The Andalusian Fowl” by L.C. Verrey.

I would love to be part of making this breed popular again, they lay well and make good birds for exhibition or pets in the garden.
